Healthcare is a right, not a privilege

Healthcare should be considered a right, not a privilege. When it comes to your health, the quality of your healthcare shouldn’t depend on your financial resources or the medical condition that you face.

US is the only country among other developed nations that denies universal health coverage to its citizens. Since our representative in congress do not have a spine to recognize healthcare as a right, majority of Americans suffer as a result of a broken healthcare system that favors the rich and privileged.

The irony is that most members of congress have the best healthcare plan themselves fully paid by the taxpayers while they deny everyone else of the universal healthcare.

In a wealthy country with 19 trillion GDP a year, many Americans have to file for bankruptcy simply because they can’t afford to pay for their medical bills:

Even people with health insurance plan can’t afford their medical bills because their coverage wouldn’t fully pay for their medical condition. Keep in mind that just because someone has an insurance plan, it does not necessarily mean that they can afford their doctor, hospital, drugs or medical bills.

And what is the point of having an insurance plan when your coverage won’t protect the patients’ finances from hospital cost to prescription drugs? According to a recent report, 45% of Americans claim that they cannot afford $400 in an emergency without having to use credit cards or having to borrow from family or friends.

Large medical bills Americans cannot afford to pay is the number one reason behind most bankruptcies in US and every 30 seconds one person files for bankruptcy as a result of a large medical bill in America.

Universal healthcare coverage will improve the health of the American people and it is the right thing to do. Most Americans want universal healthcare and this is a moral hazard that as one of the wealthiest nations on earth, we cannot afford to provide our citizens with healthcare and medicine when they need it the most. At the same time we have large sums of money to bailout the banks or give the biggest tax cut to the millionaires and billionaires.
